A Million Miles Away – Sketch 3

I need your help. I really, really can’t decide if Prodo-1‘s countdown belongs at the end of this song. It’s supposed to parallel one of the final chapters of The Lives of Dexter Peterson where the Gale Odyssey is about to essplode, but I don’t think it works without that context. This song is actually kind of sweet and the countdown just seems misplaced.

What do you think?

Take Me Apart

Screwdrivers

The second member of the Entourage gets her song this month. Like George, Sarah gets a custom song written just for her. This one’s about her somewhat insane husband. I think I’ll let her describe this one…

Geeks come in many different types. As it happens I’m a gamer. My husband is also a geek but he belongs to a much more ‘dangerous’ class. His particular subset of geek revolves around liking to know how things work, and he is also particularly fond of things that go boom, bang etc. Fixing things and taking things apart, even destructively, is therefore normal behaviour…

The song I’m looking for could therefore be best described as “the joys/perils of living with a geek”.

As well as the usual sorts of technology you’ll find round any geek, this house boasts (amongst other things) a scale model trebuchet in the garage (it throws golf balls or similar sized objects), a wastepaper basket filled with arrows in the living room… My husband has a flamethrower which basically consists of a metal pipe which you screw a bottle of butane onto. He uses it for killing the weeds on the drive.

Wow. Well, if I ever visit, I’m bringing a flak jacket. In the mean time, I hope they enjoy this tune! I didn’t so much write it as a cautionary tale (I’ve already done that once or twice), but more as a fictional plea from said wife to said husband. Rather than spend time (and endanger lives) with the toys, why not get to know how your loved one works instead?

This Empty Room

Empty Room
Rolling along with the theme of moving, I thought about what it must be like to start a new life with someone. My room mates are married and have already made the shift from “you and I” to “we”, but I haven’t made it there yet.

It seems like one of the hardest things to do as a relationship gets serious is to stop thinking about your life, your stuff, and your way of doing things, focusing instead on your future with that special other person.

I imagine it’s sort of like moving into an empty house. You had all your stuff in its places back at the old house, but now you have to rearrange your entire life to fit the new environment. If my life was like an empty room, I’d want someone else to fill it with me.

Prayer For Danny

This is a song I wrote and recorded back in 2001, but many of the Members have been requesting a newer version (now that I can sing and play a lot better, I assume). It’s about a Christian boy coming to terms with the fact that he’s gay. So often we’re faced with the assumption that one must be straight to be Christian, but I believe that assumption is pure arrogance. Sin or not, I was always taught that Christ made people pure and I believe that many gay Christians need to hear that reassurance from time to time.

An Ordinary Guy

The latest piece from Matthew is an introduction from a lonely geek to someone he’d like to get a little closer to. No pretenses, just honesty. Which may not always be the best approach, to be honest.

Two Stars

This one was written by Matthew for Spring 2009′s VIP Song Winner Tony Carcieri.

So, what I would like would be something for my 2 boys (ages soon to be 6 and 7) who mean the absolute world to me (ask anyone who knows me on FB). Without them, I would not be the man I am today…Would love something in there about how their mom and I are not together anymore (divorced) but how we both love them totally and unconditionally.

Since I am a fan of creativity, I will let you decide on style (as long as it’s not Polka, Rap, Bluegrass).

…I live for my boys. They are my world, my priority. People say, I do not know what I would do without my kids. I can truly say, from my heart, I would be lost without them. I love them so much Matt. It’s hard to picture life before them.
-Tony Carcieri, VIP Member

Well, Mr. Carcieri, hopefully this will convey what you’re feeling. Congratulations on winning the first VIP song from Matthew Ebel dot net!

Night Train

This is Matthew’s first foray into heavily-electronic genres like Techno and Trance. This Trance piece is about frustration between lovers, caught on opposite ends of the same city.

I Can Fly

Matthew wrote this song a couple of years ago for his friend’s wedding. The song has surfaced a few times at live concerts and on internet bootlegs, but this is the first time he’s gone into the studio to record it properly.

You’re All I Need

If you recently read this post on Matthew’s blog, this is the song he was talking about. Here’s Matthew’s story behind “You’re All I Need”:

I got many suggestions from people that I should do another Christmas song, but one suggestion was that I write a blues number for all the people who are feeling the economic weight on their shoulders this year. Believe me, I can sympathize- I’m already broke most of the time, and the pressure to buy a bunch of stuff for everyone because it’s Christmas never, ever feels good. You either have to tell everyone you’re broke or everyone assumes you’re a cheap bastard.

Photo by krisdecurtisWhile writing lyrics I imagined what it must be like for a single parent right now, having to explain to his little daughter that they can barely afford to keep the house they live in. Presents and toys will have to happen next year, hopefully.

When I got to the last verse of the song, I actually started crying. I honestly don’t know if I could say that kind of thing to my children, if I had any. I would just be glad that I had my family, that would be present enough for me. That would be all I’d need.

For me, this is just a song. What broke me down is that, for many people this year, it’s reality.
