The Chartbombing Concert

I had just spent an entire day running a promotional blitz to try and push a song from my new album into the iTunes and Amazon charts. Hundreds of people had volunteered their hard-earned 99¢, some of them even grabbing the whole album in the process, and through it all I got to watch the love pouring in from Twitter, Google+, and text messages. Truly, I have the best fans ever invented.

To cap off the Epic Day of Much Hype™, I performed a full streaming concert on UStream, YouTube Live, and Google Hangouts, thanks to the wonderful Lynette Radio. To say the least, I was exhausted, but I didn’t care… I had two or three full chat rooms, a full mug of my own beer, and a new studio set to play in. I wish every Wednesday could be like that!

Live at FWA 2012

For the fifth consecutive year the folks at Furry Weekend Atlanta brought me down to entertain the animals that flock there every year. Sadly, this year I was alone onstage… but I was hardly alone in the main ballroom. With one of the most responsive, enthusiastic crowds I’ve ever seen, I was able to party with several hundred people on a Friday night.

Unfortunately I screwed up the recording process, so all I had to work with was the board mix from the back of the room. I cleaned this one up the best I could, though, and hopefully it’ll bring back some memories for some of you!

Live at FC 2012

Finally, I hit the West Coast. The good folks at Further Confusion not only invited me out to play their fine convention, they made me a freaking Guest of Honor. Runtt and I came, we saw, we made loud noises, and we really hope we entertained some people. Plenty showed up, even though it was our first time playing the west coast together.

And now the return of the attack of the bride of the Cave Verde gig from October. If you thought the first half was fun, you’re going to love the second half. After the “normal” dinner crowd disappears, only the weirdos (like us) remain. That means there’s a lot more goofing around and a lot of caffeine.

This one actually starts and ends with what any sane judge would consider a parody, and that’s the story I’m sticking to. As it turns out, Runtt isn’t the only one who throws Styx around.

Live at FishCon 2011

The great feast of a thousand rolls has returned. This year the crowd was particularly rowdy- and God knows I love that. We put the UStream chat up on the big screen and let the flesh-based audience interact with the digital audience… something I’m not sure was such a good idea. But hey, it made for an interesting show!

No fish were harmed in the making of this concert. We harmed the hell out of them for a few hours beforehand, that’s all.

I Wish I Were (Sketch 4)

This is the first taste of The Lives of Dexter Peterson that I would consider release-ready. I’d still like to send the album to a real mastering studio when it’s done, but this is the best mixing job I think I can do without calling in a professional engineer.

A hurricane is coming, but that doesn’t mean I can’t still have fun in my own basement. The cameras are rolling, the coffee is flowing, and it’s an all-request night live on the intertubes! Eager to escape the oppressive New Hampshire heat wave, I headed for somewhere cooler. Somewhere breezier. Somewhere… wait, FLORIDA? Man, I need to smack some sense into my agent. Crap, I am my agent. Excuse me while I smack myself.

In the mean time, this year was the best Megaplex I’ve been to yet. The people that came to my show were energetic, responsive, and ready to have fun. Good thing, too, ’cause it wasn’t going to be easy distracting them from the temperatures outside!

What can possibly go wrong at a little coffee house concert? Let’s see…

Garageband could crash a few times during the recording process and eat half the show.
My crowd recorder could run out of batteries halfway through the show.
We could forget to mic the drums.
I could spill water on the mixing board and electrocute the sound guy.

I suppose if I had to avoid only one of those, I managed to nail the right one. Still, despite the rest, the concert was fun and won’t be the last time we play there!

Mark Your Calendar: September 17, 2011

It’s that time of year again… time to kick back with a cold beer, some fresh food, and your favorite piano rocker in my home studio. We’ll be touring another local brewery, grilling outside (weather permitting), and retiring to the studio afterwards for a private concert. As always, I’ll be providing some of my own home-brewed ale for those that are old enough to enjoy it. This year, there are even some special guests you’ll get to meet:

Genesis Whitmore, comic artist for my current project The Lives of Dexter Peterson (Tentative)
My parents. Yes, really. You get to meet the people that home-brewed me.
Runtt, my amazing drummer and friend.

Also, we’ll be doing the annual Town Hall Meeting for all subscribers, laying out the plan for the next year. That part of the event will, of course, be streamed live, but I can’t send beer via UStream.

This year, the party’s not just about beer and the annual VIP goodie bags. This time I’m planning to ~~release~~ preview some tracks from the big project I’ve been working on all year! The Lives of Dexter Peterson will be quite far along at this year’s Beer Bash and I can’t wait to show you how things are progressing.

Live at FAU 2011

I just can’t seem to escape New Jersey. This year at FA:United, the theme was officially “Wasteland” in honor of the game Fallout 3, but the unofficial center of attention was the alleged end of the world. Though the rapture ended up missing the convention entirely, at least there were plenty of people at my concert to celebrate our last days here on Earth!

Live at Cafe Verde

It’s been a long time since I’ve played a coffee house. Given the awesome (and stupendously loud) crowds that come to my shows at the conventions, I’m always a bit surprised by the gear shift that coffee shops and house concerts represent. It’s intimate, personal, and feels a lot more like a bunch of my friends just hanging out than a concert.

Live at FWA 2011

Sure, I’ve played Furry Weekend Atlanta four years in a row now, but this time I brought a little something extra with me: a drummer. Not just any drummer, a guy named Runtt who kicks a whole lot of ass. This was our debut show together in front of about 400 fans. To say the least we had fun!

This is also the first time since 2005 that I’ve had to mix live drums, so please let me know what you think. One of these days I’ll have enough subscribers to pay a real engineer to do this stuff for me, but in the mean time you get the best mix I can offer. I hope you like it!

Hey, you remember 2010? It seems like only a year ago. Well, a few weeks ago. But I’m talking about January 2010, a time when flooding was the last thing I ever thought I’d have to deal with and I was only giving out 3 free songs for email signups.

It also happens that I played a 2-hour UStream show for over 9,000 viewers. Yeah, not a typo. See for yourself, but at this point only the Entourage and the Robot Army can listen to Part 1. Oh yeah, they didn’t exist back then either.
