Lab Mouse
This song was created for our second VIP Song Winner, Thomas Jalbert. He wanted something of a sequel to “A Cautionary Tail” from Goodbye Planet Earth, something involving those adorable fuzzy characters in a science lab. The protagonists are a pair of carnivores named Jamey Randmeyer and Dr. Shawn Kesten, and myself.

Like A Cautionary Tail, it’s a story that doesn’t exactly have a happy ending. Or middle. Or beginning for that matter (sorry if I’m bumming you out). In the beginning we’re three scientists working on the same project- and I’m their supervisor. When I naively step in to try and protect the mice they’re working with, they’re left with no one else to experiment on except… me. By the end of this mess they have me believing I’m another lab mouse in a little box.

Lyrics:

Shawn and Jamey showed me photographs
of everything they did before the crash.
I thought that I was watching over them,
but it seems that I’m the one behind the glass.
What could I do?
It was always one on two.

They stole the photos from my memory:
The three of us worked through the night.
We tortured mice to save humanity,
but I never felt that it was right.
What could I say?
It was always done that way.

Shawn and Jamey, they’re just fine.
They got what they want and I got mine.
I’m in my padded room with all the rest of you
singing this song about Jamey and Shawn.

Well I suppose I had it coming when
I grew a pair and took a stand.
So they decided I was one of them:
Just a mouse and not a man.
Well how should I feel?
I’d run away if I could leave this wheel.

The final photo showed me as I am:
A rodent trapped inside a box.
And now I see what they have always been:
A hungry wolf and hungry fox.
But how could I see?
They were always testing me.

Shawn and Jamey, they’re just fine.
They got what they want and I got mine.
I’m in my padded room with all the rest of you
singing this song about Jamey and Shawn.

Shawn and Jamey, they’re just fine.
They got what they want and I got mine all mine.
I’m in my padded room with all the rest of you
and I feel fine… (One more time!)

Shawn and Jamey, they’re just fine.
They got what they want and I got mine.
I’m in my padded room with all the rest of you
and I feel fine… (One more time!)

Shawn and Jamey, they’re just fine.
They got what they want and I got mine all mine.
I’m in my padded room with all the rest of you
singing this song…
